Through The Lens is a virtual group designed to provide a space for young adult cancer survivors to share their cancer stories through photography. Each week, you are provided with a prompt to consider and photograph. Each week during group time, you share the photographs you have taken with your phone/camera and what each photo means to you. All levels of photography are embraced and welcomed. This is not a photography class, though general tips and tricks will be provided! You will learn how to use photography as a creative coping tool for your experience with YA cancer, share your story, and build community with other YA survivors.
How does it work? You will meet with the same group of YA cancer patients/survivors weekly via Zoom. Before the group meets, you will be provided with a prompt to consider in your photography. Some examples of possible prompts include: “Who Am I?”, “What Matters Most”, “Coping with Bad Days”, and “Living Life to the Fullest”. After the conclusion of your cohort, you have the option to participate in a photo exhibit, where group members will display their photos and raise awareness of their experiences as young adults with cancer. Each cohort may vary in length of time or in special focus. Check out past and upcoming offerings on the right-hand side of this page!
Special thank you to Jen Currin-McCulloch, PhD, assistant professor of Social Work at Colorado State University, who pioneered this intervention. Learn more about her work here.
