The Inner Canvas: A Recipe For Comfort 🥧

If comfort came with a recipe card, what would be on yours?

Maybe it calls for one oversized sweatshirt, a carb of your choosing, the exact same TV show you’ve watched 47 times, a dog who has no concept of personal space, and absolutely zero plans after 7 PM. Or maybe comfort is loud music in the car, something your grandma used to make, a familiar smell, a specific person, being outside, making something with your hands, or finally getting to be alone.

Turns out, comfort is very personal.

For November, The Inner Canvas is cooking up a Recipe for Comfort as we explore all the big, small, sentimental, sensory, wonderfully weird things that help us feel cared for and a little more at home in ourselves. And during a season filled with food, traditions, family, gratitude, expectations, and approximately one million feelings, we’re giving ourselves permission to decide what comfort actually means to us.

Throughout our 90 minutes together, we’ll mix guided grounding and visualization with journaling, reflection, and therapeutic art response activities inspired by creative works and prompts around comfort, nourishment, memory, rest, and care. Write something. Doodle something. Follow a memory. Make a page full of colors that inexplicably feel like mashed potatoes. Your creative responses can be meaningful, funny, nostalgic, abstract, or completely unexpected.

Optional sharing and conversation will be sprinkled throughout, and you can participate at whatever level feels good that day. Led by Lauren Morales, LCSW, The Inner Canvas is a monthly creative drop-in designed to help young adults facing cancer explore meaning, expression, grounding, resilience, and a little bit of magic through therapeutic art and creative coping.

No art experience required, and no actual cooking skills either. 🧑‍🍳 Grab whatever supplies you have within reach, something cozy to drink if that’s your thing, and come build your own Recipe for Comfort with us. There is no right way to make it. There is only your way.
