Young adulthood is often shaped by momentum. There is pressure to keep up, keep going, and keep producing. Cancer can disrupt that pace, forcing the body and nervous system to slow down, whether we want to or not. Over time, many young adults impacted by cancer learn to push past fatigue, minimize their needs, or treat rest as something to justify rather than something to trust.
For many AYAs, rest can feel complicated. Slowing down may bring up guilt, anxiety, frustration, or fear of falling behind. At the same time, the body may be asking clearly for pause, recovery, and care. Learning how to rest again, or for the first time, can be an important part of survivorship.
In this July edition of The Inner Canvas, Rest Is Resistance, participants will explore rest as a meaningful and necessary practice rather than a reward or afterthought. Led by a clinician, this session focuses on nervous system regulation through guided visualization, intentional breathing, reflective journaling, and gentle creative response. Participants will experiment with slowing down, listening inward, and noticing what rest looks like for them at this time.
This session is intentionally slower-paced and grounding. Structured activities are balanced with quiet moments and shared reflection with other young adults who understand how cancer can reshape energy, capacity, and rhythm. Participants are invited to engage in ways that feel supportive and restorative.
No art experience is required. This session is not about productivity or output. The focus is on regulation, awareness, and practicing rest in a way that feels accessible and realistic. Participants are encouraged to take breaks, step away if needed, and participate at their own pace.
Participants will leave with practical tools they can return to when fatigue, burnout, or overwhelm show up, along with a reminder that rest is not a failure of resilience. It is part of sustaining it.
