Unspoken Whispers: February 22

Our online, Unspoken Whispers: Creative Writing Drop In is a program designed to create a little space for connection, community, and creativity during your busy week.  Bring your lunch, bring your coffee, and write with us!

Who: young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.

When: Thursdays from 9:30-10:00am PT / 11:30am-12:30pm CT / 12:30-1:00pm ET.

Where:  Our virtual Cactus HQ in Kumospace.  We’ll send you more information about joining after you sign up. You’ll need the link that we’ll provide you, headphones with a microphone, a webcam, and whatever supplies you want write with (pen, paper, journal, etc.).

How does it work?  This program is a drop-in program, so you can come once, come weekly, or whenever you feel like it – no need to sign up for a specific session!  We’ll use the Amherst Writing and Artists Method.  In this method, the facilitator provides a writing prompt and you can use that prompt in any way you’d like to create a story over a set amount of time.  Once we’ve finished our writing (yes, the facilitator writes too!), everyone is given the opportunity to read their writing out loud. Though sharing is optional, hearing your own story and hearing someone else’s teaches us about our experiences and our stories. Once a piece is read, we reflect on the writing – What did we like? What stood out? What did we remember? Everything is considered fiction, so we do not respond to the writer as a support group may, but keep the focus on the writing itself.  Sometimes the prompts are about cancer, sometimes indirectly related to cancer, and sometimes not about cancer at all. Above all, the writing program emphasizes that we are more than a diagnosis.
