Ah, September. Here we are. The August Blue Supermoon this week ushered us out of unofficial summer and into fall. For many of us, it won’t start to feel like fall for another several weeks; for others, it remains permanently kind of balmy. I will personally be clutching onto the summer until my knuckles are white, though perhaps you’re eagerly awaiting hoodies and rewatches of Hocus Pocus. Either way, I wish you an easy and simple transition into a new month, and here are a few suggestions that are just as uncomplicated and straightforward.

Spoiler alert: I’ve accomplished a feat I didn’t know I wanted to accomplish, which is that I used the word smorgasbord in this blog post. It’s a word I don’t use often enough, honestly – and probably haven’t since I lived in New York for grad school. There was an awesome food truck event called Smorgasburg on the weekend in Williamsburg. It has since grown to an offering in cities around the country, and different locations in the city itself, but when I was there, it was just along the East River and in the footprint of a brick factory. (The park was recently renamed Marsha P. Johnson State Park, which I love.) This reflection is a bit of a smorgasbord itself: a buffet, if you will, with offerings ranging from photos to small business support. I invite you to peruse, pick your fineries, and enjoy.

This past weekend I went to the beach for the first time this summer. It was an extra-hot day on the sand with a fair number of greenheads, so I wanted to go into the ocean pretty early on. August along Atlantic Ocean shores has the kid of cold that will take your breath away, but I knew I wanted to get full-body relief and do one of my favorite things ever: float staring up at the sky. On the way out I debated every choice I’d ever made in life, and once fully in I wasn’t so much acclimated as much as my body was just totally numb from the water temperature. My friend and I started talking about cold plunging, which people have been hyping as a miracle for all kinds of ailments. I admire those folks, but I will say this: my life is hard in many, many other ways. I don’t want to voluntarily do hard stuff like that. I want to do easy stuff.

I spent the past several days out of office on a getaway to a coastal town. Salt air, a dog-friendly airbnb, and a no-rush approach to soaking in the things the town has to offer made it a perfect mid-August trip. I have been guilty of wondering if I could move here, a place I’ve been before on vacation; I need to remind myself that my problems would still exist, even if the locations were different. On a different note, I’m a strong fan of the staycation or being a tourist in your own town. You can spend a lifetime in some spots without ever seeing all it has to offer, or without taking advantage of local “best of” lists. Whether you are going around the corner or around the world, here are a few suggestions on how to make your vacation spot feel like home and how to bring that sense of your getaway back with you.

Happy August pals! We are back from our July program break. It was so great to see some of you yesterday at Coffee and Oodles and I hope to see more of you in the coming weeks, because our program calendar is *stacked*. For today, let’s get back into our usual eat, see, and do. And as always, if you have suggestions for things we should feature, be sure to connect with me and send an email to christina@cactuscancer.org.

I went to the movies for the first time this week since the onset of COVID-19. I was really excited to see the movie, something that hasn’t happened in a while, since I’ve been spoiled by the number of streaming services and the outrageous access I’ve received to movies at home. I felt like one of the adults in my life growing up: “why would I take you to get the ice cream when we have a gallon in the freezer at home?” Because sometimes you want to have a soft serve on a cone with sprinkles, that’s why. Or in this case, you want a movie with movie theater popcorn and the chance to be in the same theater as others, even strangers included, experiencing the same film.

As I adjust my musical earworm from “June is Bustin Out All Over” from Carousel to “In July” from Sara Bareilles, I’m bracing myself for a bit of a chaotic few days to come. The East coast, like the rest of the country, spent the last week or so in extreme weather – here, meaning thunderstorms, wind, hail, and possible tornado activity – only to have a weekend of thunderstorms to come. And what would this all be without poor air quality due to the Canadian wildfires? Sounds like a good excuse to stay in the air conditioning here, my friends.

Earlier this week, I was working on my computer when I heard a loud sound, almost like an old-fashioned police siren winding up and down. It was clearly from some distance away but becoming closer. Curious, I peered down the street to find an excited elementary schooler pumping his fist and making his way home from his last day of school on his bike, blaring some kind of celebratory siren. I immediately started to smile, remembering that same joy from my childhood: the yearbooks we signed with H.A.G.S., the excitement of being able to sleep in and watch cartoons, the freedom from homework and assignments. Even if we are still in school, or tied to our assignments, I hope we can still recapture that overwhelming joy.

I think I suffer from something I call “Recovering New Jersey Kid Summer Syndrome.” We never got out of school until late in June – I think I graduated high school on something like June 22nd? – so you basically get 9 weeks of summer, fewer if you have an activity that started before the academic year. I’d find myself at Fourth of July anxiously crying to who ever would listen “summer’s basically over already!” Now that I’m an adult, and no longer teaching at a school, the year progresses differently. It’s less about the days remaining until the school bus pulls up and more about the seasonal joys.

I write this, freshly returned from my first-ever ASCO conference. ASCO is the American Society for Clinical Oncology and I was there to greet patient advocates, pharmaceutical companies, and oncology workers as a representative of Cactus Cancer Society. It was overwhelming, to be frank: there were so many exhibitors and the conference space with massive (I don’t think I ever found one side wall!) But it was so wonderful to connect with other patient advocacy groups and tell people about the incredible community here.
