Cold Weather, Open Hearts

yoga pose

Each week we’ll be exploring a restorative yoga pose or breathing technique with images/video and tips.  Check in at Lacuna Loft on Wednesdays to anchor your week with peace, grounding, + community (and don’t forget to join the dialogue all week long)!  Excited to journey together.

Restor(y)ing Mind+Body+Soul (pt.1)

The weather is getting colder (at least where I live), the trees are changing colors, my feet are bound up in wooly socks, and I’m wearing a jacket outside.  It is fall.  And as it gets colder, I find myself hugging in more, wrapping up more, staying in more.  Physically, my shoulders start to cave forward and my back curls with them to hold the heat near my essential organs.  And then I’m looking down at the pavement instead of into the eyes of those I pass by.  I’m hurrying to my next place to get warm again.  The night falls sooner and I hide away in my cave (home).

Much of the withdrawing that fall (and winter) invite us into is a beneficial season of rest after long playful summer days.  But it prompts me to wonder, how much of this physical withdrawing translates into how I’m living?  Where am I pulling away, guarding my heart, and staying small?  Cold, tight, difficult, and dark seasons in our lives can often leave us pulled into ourselves… and yet I want to be like the bright colorful trees, sharing their joy and creative love-dance with passersby.  I want to be a human with an open heart, expressive, vulnerable, and ready to love, no matter the season (or temperature), because we are made to be connected.

Nurture yourself while keeping your heart open to LOVE as the weather gets colder by practicing this yoga pose with me this week:

Ingredients:

1 perfect space (big enough to lay down, warm, relaxing, quiet/soft music, and cozy floor or carpet/rug/blanket/towel)

1 rolled blanket, yoga block, or book wrapped in a thick towel

15-20 minutes (and maybe a timer)

In your perfect space, lay down on your back.  Grab your block/roll and place it underneath your shoulder blades, about halfway down the blades.  Relax into the support of the block/roll and the ground.  Invite your heart and chest to open up to the sky, lifted by the support.  Let your head, neck and lower back sink into the earth.  Send your breath to the front of your body, opening the ribs wide as you inhale, making room for the heart.  Breathe intentionally like this for 10-20 breaths and then relax the breath and body.  Enjoy!

Note: If you want to set a phone timer so that you aren’t worried about the ‘next’ thing, just make sure you put your phone on airplane mode so you are free from interruption!

Bonus:  Wear your favorite fuzzy socks and add a blanket on top to keep you cozy and warm.  Journal (and comment below!) about how you feel after each practice – aim for once a day for a whole week and see what you notice in your body and in your life.

Take A Break While On Vacation!

We have started a new series here on Lacuna Loft called Take A Break!  Once a week or so we’ll post a different Take A Break article with a new twist.  This week, enjoy some tips on how to...

Take A Break While On Vacation

The summer that I finished chemo, my husband and I went on a vacation with my family.  With my dad and little brother, we drove from St. Louis to Disney World in Florida.  We were in Disney World for 5 days with one day off to see the last Space Shuttle launch!  Each day in Disney we spent walking around a different park….5 days walking right after I finished chemo.  It was exhausting!  🙂  It was actually quite a stressful trip…I wanted someone to take care of me and suggest that I take a break while my dad expected me to set my own boundaries (and reasonably so!).  Anyway, the point of that story is that it *is* possible (and sometimes necessary) to take a break during a vacation 🙂  On a totally side note…traveling with my husband’s family is a completely opposite experience 🙂  They relax on vacation!  (I think my husband and I like to find a happy medium when we’re traveling by ourselves)  🙂

The real key to taking a break while on vacation with others is two part:  1) Know that it is ok to step back for 30 minutes or an hour (or maybe more if you need it!) and do your own thing.  Maybe try and illicit one other person to join you on the break?  2) Have something to do while relaxing.  Unless of course you love people watching 🙂

[list_item]Carry a bag large enough to hold a book.[/list_item]
I actually made a tote bag this past winter that takes care of this requirement really well.  If you’d like to see a tutorial of that here on Lacuna Loft just say so!  In any case, find a bag that is large enough to carry a book or a tablet (or a pair of knitting needles?) but also a bag that won’t become too heavy when you put what you want in it 🙂

[list_item]Bring a book.[/list_item]
One of my favorite, easily carried around hobbies is reading.  My husband recently started reading with a Kindle Paperwhite and uses it everyday.  I will admit that I love the feel and smell of a real book but I may be converted one day 🙂  When walking around a big city, finding a bench outside or place to perch in a department store is pretty easy.  Just sit down for a few minutes, letting your friends/family that you’re traveling with know where to find you and when they might expect you to be ready to go again… and relax!

[list_item]Play a game.[/list_item]
There are a number of awesome games that are easy to carry with you and that don’t take up too much space.  Have you tried Bananagrams or Pass the Pigs?  If you can convince a friend to take a break with you, the two of you (or more?) will be set for 30 minutes of relaxation no problem!

[list_item]Bring a pen and paper.[/list_item]
I like to carry around a small notebook with me.  It makes jotting down spur of the moment ideas and thoughts so much more convenient.

[list_item]Have some sewing supplies on hand.[/list_item]
My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was fairly young and I really like it!  It is such a great way to keep your hands busy and complete an activity that doesn’t require huge parts or your brain power 🙂  I’ve started an afghan recently but it is definitely a slow work in process.  My sister in law and her fiance like needlepoint.  They always have a cool cross-stitch project on hand when they travel home for holidays.  These sorts of supplies and projects are easily found in your local craft store!

Take A Break Outside!

Take A Break Outside…

[list_item]Grab a magazine or book.[/list_item]
Reading is one of the best activities to do outside.  Flipping through a magazine or diving into a great novel is always best with a little sunshine and fresh breeze.  Right now, I’m reading The Jew in the Lotus, The Dragonriders of Pern, and am about to start Children of the Mind.  (I’m typically reading more than one book at once.)  If you’re looking for more of a memoir kind of read, an acquaintance of mine just published one entitled Metastatic Memories about his journey as a young adult with cancer.

[list_item]Bring a tv show![/list_item]
In my backyard, I have this awesome hammock.  From the hammock I can still get the house wifi.  When I was in treatments, I basically stopped reading.  (I know other people who read non-stop!  Everyone reacts so differently 🙂  )  Instead of reading during those months, I would start from the beginning of a tv series, and watch all the way through (with breaks of course haha).  Are you watching any fun tv shows right now?  Try Alias if you haven’t seen it already!  Really fun spy show 🙂

Take A Break With A Good Book

Take A Break With A Good Book…

[list_item]Pick out the perfect book.[/list_item]
Picking out the perfect book is hard to do sometimes.  Do you re-read a classic or try something new?  Sometimes I use this site, which literally helps you decide what to read next.

[list_item]Get comfy.[/list_item]
I love to read in a great chair or in bed.  Having a bit of a flat surface to keep your book on while propped up with pillows behind you can make all the difference.  I love using a lap board desk just for this purpose.  I also enjoy getting under the covers.  A blanket similar to this one is nicknamed the wookie in my house and is loved by humans and dogs alike. 🙂

[list_item]Stay hydrated.[/list_item]
Reading all day can be taxing work! 😉  I like to keep a bottle of water always on hand.  My current bottle, always by my side, is this purple one.  I am also a huge fan of sparkling juices.

[list_item]Enjoy![/list_item]

Take A Break With A Good Movie

Take A Break With A Good Movie…

[list type=”like”]
[list_item]Pick out the perfect flick.[/list_item]
Whether you’re watching an old favorite for the 100th time or a brand new flick, pick out the movie that will brighten your day!  You might also want to check out this site that lets you know whether an animal is harmed in the movie. (I know that I always find it a huge bummer when an animal dies just as I’m starting to enjoy myself!)

[list_item]Find some snacks.[/list_item]
Movies are always more fun with a snack in hand.  Are you in the mood for movie theater butter popcorn, movie night candy, or maybe some fun sparkling juice?

[list_item]Invite some friends.[/list_item]
I tend to gab during movies (would this bother you?) and love to engage some friends with what is worth gabbing about!  Whether you’re having a why did she just do that?! or a finally! kind of movie moment, it is always more fun to share 🙂  You could even issue everyone movie tickets and add some decorations!

[list_item]Cozy up.[/list_item]
If you’re going to watch a movie from home, there is no reason not to be comfortable and cozy.  You could reach for a Lacuna Loft cozy infinity scarf, a tried and true snuggie or blanket, or even a travel pillow.

Some Relaxing Activities

Going through cancer treatments, suffering from a long term illness, or being a caregiver as a young adult is really hard.  I went from running marathons and being a busy-bee graduate student, attempting to research and salsa dance my way around life, to needing to take the summer off to finish chemotherapy treatments.  Young adults are used to feeling in charge and able to conquer the world!  Instead, I felt sick a lot and found reading (another favorite past time of mine) difficult to concentrate on.  What resulted from this new found lack of direction was massive boredom.  I discovered that I had very few hobbies that could be accomplished in a calm atmosphere and even fewer that I could do while dealing with a recent chemo treatment.

Have you been looking for activities to do when you aren’t feeling well or don’t have a lot of energy because of chemo treatments or another long term illness?  What about when you are so exhausted from caregiving that you need a break?  Look no further!  There is a blog, specifically called Staying Calm that has a bunch of great articles on calming activities.  I recently round one of their lists that featured relaxing things and realized that I have enjoyed many of those when I needed a calmer way of entertaining myself.  Here is my list of favorite, calm activities…

[list type=”like”]
[list_item]watch a movie or favorite tv show.[/list_item]

[list_item]go for a walk.[/list_item]

[list_item]send someone a note or card.[/list_item]

[list_item]complete a task around the house.[/list_item]

[list_item]take a warm bath.[/list_item]

[list_item]color.[/list_item]

[list_item]try a new DIY project.[/list_item]

[list_item]do a logic puzzle.[/list_item]

[list_item]call up a friend.[/list_item]
[/list]

Eventually I learned that by making a list of everything that I wanted to do (and knowing that I couldn’t add things like, run 10 miles, to the list…), I could always find something worth attempting.  What activities do you like doing when you aren’t feeling well? Let us know!!!
