These 31 articles are the best of the best and we’re very happy to share them with you again!  The countdown continues tomorrow!

No, it wasn’t breast cancer, I just have small boobs.

After sizing me up, a man I just met had asked if it was breast cancer. And though I didn’t answer “No I just have small boobs” out loud, I most definitely said it in my head with uproarious laughter. (He was a nice man, which is why I laughed. Uproariously.)

Here’s the quick lowdown to satiate that little voyeuristic desire to know the details while simultaneously feeling a bit guilty that you want to know about someone’s cancer… it’s ok, we all do it. Cancer comes in so many forms (sadly), and even people with the same kind of cancer go through different treatments and deal with different complications along the way, so I’ll just give a quick summary.

Rare blood cancer: Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia type 2 (CMML-2). Diagnosed May 2013. I was 24 and otherwise completely healthy. It was found randomly. I did outpatient chemo for three months then month-long inpatient induction chemo to put me in remission, then a week off, then another month inpatient transplant-prep chemo to kill all my bone marrow, then a very anti-climatic bag of pink stem cells from an unknown donor was hung and dripped into my body and saved my life, NBD. After that I spent about a year in quarantine from the world in a little apartment in Salem, MA with my youngest sister (who was my caregiver, at 20 years old!) as my new immune system grew like a little, often treacherous, baby…

cancer bullying

To celebrate our 2-year anniversary of being a nonprofit, Lacuna Loft is bringing back our top 31 articles from our archives!  This is Flashback #31!  The Anti-Bullying Cancer Manifesto was written by Christina.  These 31 articles are the best of the best and we’re very happy to share them with you again!  The countdown continues tomorrow!

This may seem like an odd topic when discussing cancer, but cancer bullying is surprisingly prevalent – and it needs to stop!  In my time going through cancer, and since recovery, I’ve discovered that there is a little-known – yet highly-destructive – phenomenon called, Cancer Bullying.

This manifesto is intended to shine light on the many forms cancer bullying can take, and why they are detrimental to those experiencing cancer.

Types of Cancer Bullying

Cancer bullying comes in many forms, but in this manifesto I’ll go into these four main types of cancer bullying:

  • Treatment choices (aka, East vs West)
  • Emotions & boundaries
  • The cancer pissing contest (aka, My cancer is worse)
  • Nit-picking over words, names and references

All of them are pervasive, and some – ironically – sprout from good intentions, and can even come from our loved ones.

I dedicate this Anti-Bullying Cancer Manifesto to all past, present and future cancer warriors.

Today, April 7, 2017, Lacuna Loft celebrates our 2-year anniversary of being a nonprofit organization!!!

In honor of our two years, we’re going to spend the next month and a half sharing our top 30 posts.  Get ready to read (or re-read) some wonderful pieces of wisdom from so many of our contributors.  Our book club’s posts will continue on as normal on Mondays but we’ll be disrupting our friday, link round up posts.

How do we choose the top 30, you ask?  Directly from you!  We’ve dug into our analytics and have identified the 30 most popular posts (out of all 763 articles that have been published before today).  I’m really looking forward to walking down memory lane and picking out some of the gems hidden in our archives.  These articles feature the voices of many, many courageous young adult cancer survivors and caregivers who stepped forward, showed up, and helped someone know that they weren’t alone.  These 30 are the best of the best and I’m very happy to share them with you again!
