We hope you’re having a great summer!

We can’t believe it’s July already! This summer is flying by!

We wanted to let you know that Cactus Cancer Society (formerly Lacuna Loft) will be pushing pause on programs through the month of July. We’ve got some pretty amazing things in the works and we’re very excited about getting back to you this August with more wonderful programs.

What do we plan on doing for the rest of the month? Trust us, it’s not a vacation ;). It’ll be business as usual over here as we strategically plan, grant write, program plan, evaluate, dream, network, and talk young adult cancer survivorship to anyone who will listen! We’ll also be moving into our new website for Cactus Cancer Society (pardon our dust in the interim, and more on that here), as well as going crazy at the chalkboard with Elephants and Tea planning out Gabfest 2021!

Don’t’ worry! While we’re busy behind the scenes, you’ll still be able to:

  • Read through our blog! It dates back all the way through March of 2014, so there’s lots to read!
  • Take part in a meditation series with Mamma G at Elephants and Tea on July 11th and July 18th!
  • Sign up for our new Guy’s Discussion program! It premieres in August and we are SO excited about it.
  • The next Survivorship Series has been announced! Register today!
  • Check out our Grief to Gratitude workshop with Lov Yoga and Tara Picklo that is starting when we get back!
  • Are you a healthcare provider? Get all the details on our FREE continuing education course with LCSW Jean Rowe, Nourish, Nurture, and Renew.
  • And much, much more on our Upcoming Programs page!

In the meantime, we’d love to hear from you! Feel free to email info@lacunaloft.org and tell us anything! From what new yummy recipe you’ve tried out, who your favorite Tik-Tok-er is, to what Pinterest fails (or wins!) you’ve been up to creating this summer! It could even be what you want to see more of here at Cactus Cancer Society, we want to hear it all!

Have a wonderful July and we’ll see you in August! 🙂

Host A Party!

host a party for lacuna loft

Welcome to Pledge Drive week!  At Lacuna Loft, we provide all of our programs free of charge to young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.  This week, we’re launching a week-long, brand new initiative to provide you with tools to lend support to Lacuna Loft if you’d like!  All week long, we’ll delve into Lacuna Loft’s needs and let you know how you can help!  Day Five!

Last day of the Pledge Drive!  Today we’re talking about how else you could help support Lacuna Loft as we help support young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers!  Host a game night, costume contest, hold a raffle, host a dinner party and charge everyone $5 admission…this is a make your own adventure type of fundraiser.  Think about what you already like to do for fun with your friends, and do that!  (With the added bonus of helping Lacuna Loft along the way).

Every dollar that you raise creates an impact.  Raise $25?  That provides a book for a young adult cancer survivor in our Book Club.  Raise $50?  That provides a supply box for a young adult cancer survivor in our Creative Workshops.  Raise $100?  That sends 1000 brochures to healthcare providers to hand out to their young adult cancer patients.  Raise $250?  Well…you get the picture.  We’ll always provide you with 100% transparency behind our financials and our impact so that you can trust where your money goes and where our effort is headed.

A lot has happened this first, Pledge Drive week.  Thank you for coming along for the ride with us.

With you on our team, we can continue offering programs free of charge to young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers!

Behind the Scenes: Where You Can Meet Lacuna Loft In Person This Year

cancer advocacy

Here at Lacuna Loft, we are all about the behind the scenes, nitty-gritty of running an organization. When I started Lacuna Loft, I relied on some very communicative and helpful small business owners to help guide me…along with a load of library books!  In the Behind the Scenes series we’ll talk about the various stages of the development of Lacuna Loft and some of the lessons we’ve learned along the way. You’ll hear often from me, the Founder and CEO of Lacuna Loft, as well as from our Design Guru, board members, contributors, and more!

Today we’ll let you know where you can meet Lacuna Loft in person this year!

If you’ve missed other posts in our Behind the Scenes series, check out a day in the life of Lacuna Loft’s founderLacuna Loft’s First Daysan FAQ with our founder (me!), and Lacuna Loft’s Board of Directors.

Every year, Lacuna Loft travels to a number of conferences and events to interface with young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers, as well as the healthcare providers who care for these young adults.  This year we are traveling to several (including one this weekend!) so we thought we’d let you know where you might be able to meet a member of the Lacuna Loft team in person!

March 10 – 11, 2017 – Young Survival Coalition Summit in Oakland, CA.  This conference is specific to young breast cancer survivors and their caregivers and this year, it is right in our backyard!  Oakland, CA is where Lacuna Loft’s office is!  If you’re a breast cancer survivor, this conference is a fabulous opportunity to meet other survivor sisters and to learn about some great resources while you’re at it.

April 27 – 29, 2017 – Stupid Cancer’s CancerCon in Denver, CO.  I am on the Steering Committee for this event again this year and it is not to be missed.  If you are looking to meet a bunch of other young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers of every diagnosis under the sun, CancerCon is the place to go!

May 4 – 6, 2017 – Oncology Nursing Society’s Annual Conference in Denver, CO.  The ONS Congress is a new event for Lacuna Loft and I am really looking forward to it.  My mother was a member of the Oncology Nursing Society for a number of years and I’m anxious to meet as many of the wonderful and dedicated oncology nurses as possible.

June 2 – 6, 2017 – American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL.  ASCO is a new event for the Lacuna Loft team this year as well.  We have a booth space in the Patient Advocate area and are ready to meet and greet with as many healthcare providers as possible!

There are a few other events that we may attend this year but nothing else is set in stone.  Will you be at any of these conferences?  If so, one of our team would love to meet you!

Let us know if there is something in particular that you’d like shown as part of our Behind the Scenes series!

Behind the Scenes: Lacuna Loft’s Board Of Directors

Today we’ll introduce you all to our Board of Directors working hard behind the scenes of Lacuna Loft!

If you’ve missed other posts in our Behind the Scenes series, check out a day in the life of Lacuna Loft’s founderLacuna Loft’s First Days, and an FAQ with our founder (me!).

For those of you unfamiliar with the nonprofit world, the Board of Directors is a group of individuals all nonprofits in the US need to have.  Board Members are responsible for making sure the organization’s activities remain in line with the organization’s goals and mission.  The Board of Directors at Lacuna Loft are very much a working board, which means that they not only help with the overall strategy of the organization but also in some of the day-to-day activities such as program development and fundraising.  These individuals are a huge asset to the organization and I’m not sure where I’d be without their hard word and dedication.  We are a small Board which means that everyone is very involved and decisions can be made quickly.  Having said that, we are looking to grow in the coming months.  If you’re interested in learning more about what being a Board Member looks like, email mallory@lacunaloft.org and we can chat!

Lacuna Loft is also very fortunate to have recently formed a Scientific + Medical Advisory Board.  We’ll let you meet them in a few weeks!  These wonderfully talented individuals will be helping with overall direction, impact, and evaluation of our programs.  For any young adult cancer survivors or caregivers out there, Lacuna Loft is currently forming a  YA Cancer Survivor + Caregiver Advisory Board.  If you’re interested in joining or learning more about this volunteer opportunity, please email mallory@lacunaloft.org and I can send you some more information!

Without further ado, please meet our wonderful Board of Directors!!!

Mal-picture-tiny-180-180Mallory Casperson – CEO + Founder, President, Board of Directors
Mallory has an MS and half a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Several months after serving as a primary caregiver for her mother, during the final months of her life, Mallory was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 24. Several years after her diagnosis, Mallory realized that her new survivorship needs didn’t fit into the work-life balance mold enforced by her graduate school research schedule. After leaving graduate school, Mallory was challenged to ‘do anything she wanted’ for an entire year. That year, Lacuna Loft was launched. She now manages operations, programs, and development at Lacuna Loft where online support programs and resources are provided to young adult cancer survivors in the comfort of their own homes. Mallory is an avid lover of animals, running, swimming, hiking, being outside, reading, crafting, and TV or movie marathons.

Patti-picture-tinyPatricia McDonald – Treasurer, Board of Directors
After first her young husband’s, and later her father’s difficult battles with cancer, Patti co-founded a cancer support center to encourage, educate, and empower patients and families experiencing cancer in their lives. She later went on to serve as Founding Executive Director for a second cancer wellness center in the Chicago area. Patti serves as a Lacuna Loft Board Member to do what she can to ensure young adults facing cancer have access to the innovative, age-appropriate, and impactful programs and resources they need to improve their quality of life and well-being – no matter how challenging the circumstances. With over 20 years of experience as a nonprofit leader and fundraising executive, Patti is currently working in advancement for higher education.

shelly-picture-tiny-180-180Shelly Whitsitt – Secretary, Board of Directors
Shelly works as a director of research and strategy at a qualitative market research and creative agency, Fusion Hill. She started her career in marketing at a start-up in South America and her first experience with qualitative research was with women farmers in India. At Fusion Hill, she enjoys turning rich, qualitative research into key insights that help clients achieve their business goals. Shelly has a BA in Psychology and Spanish and an MBA with a concentration in Marketing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Key experiences in her MBA program include a yearlong project on Product Innovation in Subsistence Marketplaces, and serving as CEO of a student-run 501(c)(3). Shelly enjoys spending time with family and friends, TV binging on Netflix, or getting cozy with a book. She loves traveling and exploring new cultures, trying new and different foods, and being active outdoors.

Sarah-Goodell-picture-tiny-180-180Sarah Goodell – Member, Board of Directors
Sarah is the newest member of the Lacuna Loft board and is thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to this amazing organization. She is a Senior Analyst in Digital Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility at Mead Johnson Nutrition where she works on a variety of projects, from managing social media campaigns to coordinating CSR efforts. Prior to her work here, she was a Program Manager at Cancer and Careers, where she ran a number of their programs as well as coordinated social media and PR initiatives. During her years working in the cancer community she became very passionate about supporting survivors, particularly young adults, and helping them thrive after a diagnosis. Sarah is originally from Minneapolis but currently lives in Chicago, and is an avid rollerblader, yogi, and brunch enthusiast.

At The Critical Mass Conference In Chicago!

critical mass conference

For the next few days I’m in Chicago at the Critical Mass conference!  Did you know that Critical Mass used to be the Livestrong Young Adult Cancer Alliance?

This will be my 2nd time going to the conference and you really couldn’t ask for a grouping of nicer people.  This year the theme of the event is “Elephants in the Room” and is focused on all of the “tough” topics of the young adult cancer world.

Related to treatment and care of AYAs, these issues include sexuality, death and dying, choice and decision-making, family building, and palliative care. On a system level, there are issues of funding evidence-informed approaches, services and care delivery. Through a mix of plenary sessions and small group discussions, we’ll be tackling these “elephants” head on, calling them out and strategizes how to address them, and share resources and information to face them.

Lacuna Loft is here and ready!

Behind the Scenes: Lacuna Loft’s First Days

Here at Lacuna Loft, we are all about the behind the scenes, nitty-gritty of running an organization. When I started Lacuna Loft, I relied on some very communicative and helpful small business owners to help guide me…along with a load of library books!  In the Behind the Scenes series we’ll talk about the various stages of the development of Lacuna Loft and some of the lessons we’ve learned along the way. You’ll hear often from me, the Founder and CEO of Lacuna Loft, as well as from our Design Guru, board members, contributors, and more!

Today we’ll discuss the very beginnings of Lacuna Loft and how we chose our business structure of a not for profit corporation.

If you’ve missed other posts in our Behind the Scenes series, check out a day in the life of Lacuna Loft’s founder!

Lacuna Loft grew directly from a lack of resources that I experienced during my time spent caregiving, during my own cancer treatments, and into my survivorship.  I was a super busy graduate student, marathon runner, and doggie mama.  I loved salsa dancing and found every excuse possible to stay up late having fun.  Then caregiving hit, followed closely by my cancer diagnosis.  When I took a summer off of school to finish treatments I had no idea how to take care of myself emotionally.  I didn’t know what exercise meant.  I didn’t know how to keep myself entertained if running 5 miles, working in the lab, or staying up late weren’t on the table of options.  What followed were a few very difficult months of self discovery.

Two summers later I left graduate school and needed to face a new reality.  I started dreaming and scheming about how to fill my time and slowly, Lacuna Loft was born.  I wanted Lacuna Loft to be a place where one could come, take a break, a hiatus, a pause, and hang out.  Where one could learn how to self care and how to advocate for health and well being.  Where I could help others face their new reality with cancer with guidance, creativity, and a shoulder to lean on.  I also wanted a working environment where I could treat myself with compassion and love everyday.

My husband helped me choose a name, get a website up and running, and draft a set of branding images and logos.  We spent hours tweaking colors and website layouts.  I spent even more time talking with everyone I could about my dream.  I talked with young adult cancer survivors and caregivers, people at an expo in Champaign, IL, people in hospitals and cancer resource centers.  If I could find someone to listen to my “pitch” and offer feedback of any sort, I took the opportunity.

While building Lacuna Loft, I started with a drive and mission to build a blog and a community.  Money, though definitely necessary for living in today’s society, was not a top priority.  Lacuna Loft was thus started with the goal of being a self sustainable and free blog, selling care kits for patients, survivors, and caregivers.  Marketing, however, is not my area of expertise.  Over the course of several months, I discovered that the people who would be buying the care kits were often not the ones actually going through treatments and therefore didn’t recognize the importance of each item in the care kits.  While the kits received wonderful reviews from survivors with whom I spoke (and who purchased the kits), it became clear to me that the care kits required careful marketing, and that marketing care kits was not my life’s passion.  I wanted to write with Lacuna Loft while building a brand and advocating for young adult cancer survivors and caregivers.  The magazine needed to be my top focus.

While looking into other business structures (we had been set up as a sole proprietor thus far), I continued talking with hospital presidents, social workers, marketing departments, resource centers, nurses, and anyone else I could talk into taking a meeting with me.  Over and over again our collaborations were made more cumbersome because they were not for profits and we were set up as a for-profit.  I hit the same road block when approaching nursing organizations and other young adult cancer organizations to join their resources web pages.  If everyone we wanted to work with were nonprofit organizations, a not for profit we would become!

While having a meeting in Chicago with the founder of True North Treks, he suggested that I talk with the Bluhm Legal Clinic out of Northwestern University.  Their Entrepreneurship Law Center takes a handful of clients each semester and helps them with their legal needs for free if you’re seeking to become a nonprofit, and at a reduced rate for for-profit entities.  Lacuna Loft applied and was accepted!  We incorporated as a not for profit corporation in the State of California and applied for (and received) our tax exempt 501(c)3 status.  We formed a board, approved by-laws and everything else required by the State of California, and the rest is history!

It has never been important to me how Lacuna Loft is structured.  As long as Lacuna Loft is allowed to work with other key players in the healthcare and young adult cancer arena and as long as we are able to reach young adults facing cancer as survivors or caregivers, I’m a happy Founder and CEO.
