Speaker Series Talk: Learning To Live Life Post Cancer – Kim

living life after cancer

Our 2nd Speaker Series talk is live!  Check out Kim’s talk on Learning To Live Life Post Cancer in the video below!

It was really fun chatting with Kim about her role caregiving as a young adult after her sister’s cancer diagnosis. You’ll find great tips on learning to live life post cancer as a caregiver and much more!

To hear that my sister had cancer was an indescribable feeling. For me, the only thing harder than hearing those words, was learning to live life while going through it. The second hardest has been learning to live life post-cancer. As all consuming as cancer was and is, a tremendous power was gained when I chose to take back some control during one of the most uncontrollable situations that I will probably ever face. In doing so, I have gained a unique perspective that I hope will help others to do the same.

Transparency At Lacuna Loft

transparency at Lacuna Loft

Transparency is very important to the Lacuna Loft Team.  In the spirit of transparency, we’ll always update you on what’s happening behind the scenes as well as the nitty gritty of our financials.

Lacuna Loft is funded from a variety of sources.  We have a crew of great donors (if you’d like to join the Flight Crew, go here!), we form partnerships with companies and receive donations or are awarded grants from them (which you can see here) either fueling Lacuna Loft’s general needs or specific programs, and eventually we’ll host some sort of fundraising event (but we haven’t done one yet).  Since we’re a nonprofit, gifts are all tax-deductible to the full extent of IRS rules + regulations and we provide all of our programs at no charge to young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.

Over this past fiscal year (July 2016 – June 2017), our expenditures can be broken up into three different areas:  Administrative, Fundraising, and Programs.  You can see our financial breakdown in the image below and you can learn more about our transparency here.

Lacuna Loft counts on our strong group of supporters…whether you’re a part of our larger young adult cancer community, a healthcare providera volunteer with Lacuna Loft, or you support Lacuna Loft financially…every contribution makes Lacuna Loft’s support programs possible.  Each and every one of you plays an important part in providing support to young adult cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.  Thank you for all you do!

living life after cancer

Last month we launched our newest program here at Lacuna Loft, the Speaker Series!  Our second Speaker Series Talk will launch on Wednesday, September 6th!  Starting on that day, you’ll be able to watch Kim talk about Learning to Live Life Post Cancer.  While the talk won’t be live, we’d love for you to submit your questions!  After reading a little abstract on the talk, fill out the short form at the bottom of this post with all of your questions!  Submit as many as you want and Kim will do her best to answer them at the end of her talk!

Different Types Of Meditation

meditation

Until very recently, I didn’t realize there were different types of meditation.  I love my subscription to Headspace but I didn’t realize that their guided meditations are only one type of the many varieties to try!

[list type=”like”]
[list_item]Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction[/list_item]
[list_item]Transcendental Meditation[/list_item]
[list_item]Primoridal Sound Meditation[/list_item]
[list_item]Heart Rhythm Meditation[/list_item]
[list_item]Kundalini[/list_item]
[list_item]Guided Visualization[/list_item]
[list_item]Qi Gong[/list_item]
[list_item]Zazen Meditation[/list_item]
[list_item]Vipassana Meditation[/list_item]
[/list]

I don’t know very much about any of these but I’m looking forward to learning more.  Each comes with its own guidelines and its own goals.  So much opportunity for meditation!

Have you practiced more than one type of meditation?  Which one is your favorite?  We’d love to hear your experiences!

Speaker Series Talk: Finding Purpose – Anjali

young adult cancer speaker

Our very first Speaker Series talk is live!  Check out Anjali’s talk on Finding Purpose in the video below!

I had a great time chatting with Anjali about her passion project and how it arose after a very purposeful search.  You’ll find tips on going about your own search for purpose and lots more.

After experiencing young adult cancer, as a survivor or a caregiver, many of us have experienced feeling lost in the Now What? feeling.  After the treatments end, or if there isn’t an end, redefining how to move forward is different for everyone.  What seems to be universal, is needing to develop a new normal because that old one just doesn’t fit quite like it used to!  Anjali went out, in a very systematic fashion, to redefine what purpose meant for her.  Are you searching for purpose again?  Are you trying to find your way after young adult cancer in a world that seems a little different than before?  Then check out this talk!

Research Study On How People Cope With Cancer

cancer coping study

Interested in helping researchers learn how people cope with cancer?  Researchers out of Adelphi University are interested in hearing the voices of cancer survivors, asking a series of questions regarding your coping strategies and psychological functioning after cancer diagnosis, for a study entitled, “Expectations for Fighting Spirit in Cancer Patients: Analysis of the Relationships between Interpersonal Congruency and Mental Health Functioning.”

More about the study:  You will qualify for the study if you are 18 years old or older and have been diagnosed with any type of cancer – excluding brain cancer – at least one month prior to participation in the study. The entire study will take about 20 minutes to complete. If you are uncomfortable at any time, you are welcome to stop answering the questions.

You can use the following link to access the study.

The research team would like to thank you for considering your participation and to let you know the study is confidential.  Please feel free to send this study to others who may qualify.
